Friday Sessions - Test Your English With The Power Of Music. Celebrating 100 Friday Sessions and getting back to basics with personal pronouns, have you cracked them yet?...

Yes, this week we’ve reached the big 100! These Friday Sessions started with a few select listeners, (and there were quite a few before the 100 now found on my website…) A true labour of love, I create them to share my passion for music, image, language, words, phrases and idioms. I have seen how music creates emotion, fun and triggers the memory like nothing else, so ultimately I think of you, the listener who I love to support and motivate. If I can help you make connections, big or small, to revise, capture and maybe never forget that new word or phrase, then I am very happy, and my work is done! Thank you to everyone who listens and follows these sessions. You rock! 😉

We are listening to South African singer songwriter, Alice Phoebe Lou this week, and her track ‘SHE.’

Let’s talk about pronouns. Today’s lyric: ‘She, she’

So I realise this can be a controversial topic since pronouns have been a big social identity discussion in recent years, but when communicating in another language, (the basic confusion between ‘he’ and ‘she’ for example,) can often be one of those common errors that is hard to crack. On many occasions I’ve listened to someone talking about a colleague starting with the pronoun ‘she’ and then later in the story they will start referring to the same person as ‘he’?!!

You probably learnt basic pronouns in one of your first English classes, I’m sure you know them, but do you use them incorrectly without even realising? Making this error unconsciously in any situation, (professional or social,) can range from confusing to insulting, so it’s worth paying attention and getting it right.

This week’s track should help you focus. She, she, she, she, she, she is mentioned 25 times. And here is a grammatical reminder just in case:

She – subject pronoun

Her – object pronoun

Hers – possessive pronoun

Herself – reflexive pronoun

Lyrics:

She, she
She, she

She cut a hole in the fence and she ran
She left her troublesome prison behind
She didn’t wanna fuel the fire
She didn’t wanna lose her desire

She, she
She, she

She looked out out to the horizon
She didn’t have much left to see
Greed had taken the trees away
Greed had taken the bees away

She, she
She, she

She don’t know where she gonna go now
She looked up to where there should’ve been stars
She said I wanna go to Mars And this, this planet ain’t ours

She said I wanna go to Mars
And this, this planet ain’t ours
She said I wanna go to Mars
And this, this planet ain’t ours

Ours
Ours
