Friday Sessions #102: ‘Can I ever get past the wounds of love?’ – ‘Wounds of Love’ Nation of Language

Friday Sessions — 2 weeks ago
Friday Sessions - Test Your English With The Power Of Music. Whatever you need to get past, you can do it! This week's track will help you on your way...

It only seems appropriate to feature a band called Nation of Language in at least one Friday Session. Formed in Brooklyn, New York, their track ‘Wounds of Love‘ reflects their signature sound described as ‘synth pop.’

Today’s lyric: Can I ever get past the wounds of love?

The phrasal verb, to get past has two main meanings. The first has a physical sense, ie. to get past something that’s in the way, (for example an obstruction.) The second has a more metaphorical meaning similar to the verb ‘to recover.’

Check the examples below:

“Once we get past this difficult stage, we can move on to the next stage of the project.”

” Do you think we can get past this car in front of us? They’re going so slowly”

“He couldn’t get past his frustration after loosing all his money on the stock market.”

So, in the case of our featured lyric, we are asking the question: Do you think I can recover (get past) from the pain and hurt (wounds) inflicted by love?

*Thanks to Clara for her collaboration and suggesting this week’s track!

Lyrics:

I can’t stop
This old feeling in my heart
I could never say it enough
You don’t belong in my heart
And all my friends, they’ve turned away
They say “walk it off” but, in my heart
I was never more than what you said
And I can’t fix it I can’t help but recall

Can I ever get past the wounds of love?
No

But I can’t stop
There’s no ceiling in my heart
Foresight didn’t help me at all
I while away there, in my heart

I look away, I know the protocol
And often times I wonder
What it is that I hang around here for

Can I ever get past the wounds of love?
No

I try, I try, I try to stop it
But I can’t help but recall

Can I ever get past the wounds of love?
No
